Love, Culture & Keto: A Christ-Centered Marriage Across Continents (USA & Hungary)

Love, Culture & Keto: A Christ-Centered Marriage Across Continents

When I first met my husband, I never imagined that a big, tall Hungarian man with a deep love for paprika, hearty stews, and traditional Hungarian cooking would one day become my husband. I was an American woman raised in the south, where casseroles, comfort food, and Southern hospitality were part of everyday life. My husband grew up in Hungary, surrounded by a completely different language, culture, and culinary tradition.

On paper, our worlds seemed very far apart, but God had a plan. What began as two people from different countries eventually became a marriage, a family, and a beautiful journey of learning how to love across cultures—with Christ at the center.

When Two Cultures Become One Family

We were married in a very old church with beautiful stained-glass windows and creaky wooden pews. Friends and family from both nations surrounded us as we stood before the pastor and exchanged our vows. That day, I was reminded that Christian marriage is about so much more than two people falling in love. Marriage points us toward something greater. Paul writes in Ephesians 5 about the sacrificial love of Christ for His Church. That picture of Christ-centered love became an important foundation for our marriage. We weren't simply bringing two lives together. We were learning how to become one family while honoring the cultures, traditions, experiences, and personalities God had given each of us. And believe me, that has made for some interesting conversations, especially in the kitchen!

Love, Paprika & the Kitchen

My husband used to be a chef, so he absolutely loves to cook. I love to cook too, but let's just say we don't always approach food the same way. After being married over a decade, I'm still amazed by how differently two cultures can think about food. My husband grew up enjoying traditional Hungarian comfort foods such as gulyás, lángos, and túrós csusza.

I grew up eating things like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, salads, and all kinds of southern foods, Swedish, German, and Italian dishes.

Then, my husband and I decided to go keto together. Suddenly, we were both outside our culinary comfort zones, and that was where the fun really began.

When Low-Carb Meets Hungarian Comfort Food

For my husband, the idea of low-carb eating was initially a little difficult to embrace. After all, bread is practically a love language in Hungary, and I understood. Food isn't just about nutrition. Food carries memories. It reminds us of childhood, family gatherings, holidays, grandparents, celebrations, and home.

So, rather than completely abandoning the foods and traditions we loved, we started asking a different question:

How can we adapt our favorite foods while still honoring our health goals?

There were some successes. There were definitely some failures, and there were a few burnt almond-flour experiments along the way! Eventually, we started creating our own family food traditions.

My husband now makes a keto-friendly version of chicken paprikas (paprikás csirke) served with cauliflower rice. I've fallen in love with keto fried chicken made with an egg and almond-flour coating, along with cauliflower mashed "potatoes."

And yes—we still love dessert....brownies, cookies, cheesecake, and more.

We've discovered that eating low-carb doesn't necessarily mean saying goodbye to every food we love. Sometimes it means learning how to make thoughtful substitutions and discovering new ways to prepare familiar favorites.

Our daughter is growing up watching both of us cook, experiment, laugh, and occasionally make a mess in the kitchen, and honestly, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

What Keto Taught Us About Marriage

Our keto journey became about much more than food. It taught us something about marriage. Marriage requires flexibility. It requires patience. It requires forgiveness, and sometimes, it requires laughing when your recipe doesn't turn out the way you expected! The same is true when two cultures come together. There are differences in communication. Different expectations. Different traditions. Different ideas about food, family, holidays, hospitality, money, and even what certain words mean, but those differences don't have to divide a marriage. They can become opportunities to grow.

Proverbs 27:17 says:

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

God can use the differences between husband and wife to refine both people. Sometimes the person who challenges us the most is also the person God is using to help us become more patient, more humble, and more loving.

Keeping Christ at the Center

We've learned that a Christ-centered marriage isn't a marriage without disagreements or differences. It's a marriage where we continually return to Christ. When we're frustrated, we pray. When we misunderstand each other, we try to extend grace. When our cultures collide, we look for ways to appreciate rather than criticize, When life gets difficult, we remind ourselves that we're on the same team.

That's one of the greatest lessons I've learned through our marriage: The goal isn't to make one culture win. The goal is to build a family where both cultures can be appreciated while Christ remains at the center.

A Family Built Across Continents

Today, we're still learning. I'm still working on pronouncing Hungarian words correctly. I seriously don't think I will ever pronounce things right. My husband is still learning some of my American expressions. Together, we're still figuring out how to keep our carbs down while enjoying good food, but that's the beauty of marriage. You don't have to have everything figured out on your wedding day. You simply need a willingness to keep learning, keep forgiving, keep praying, and keep choosing each other.

God has taken two people from two totally different countries and cultures and woven our stories together in a way neither of us could have planned ourselves, and I'm grateful.

If You're in an Intercultural Marriage

If you're married to someone from another culture or you're considering an intercultural relationship, I want to encourage you:

- Don't be afraid of your differences.

- Talk about them.

- Laugh about them.

- Learn from them.

- Celebrate them.

- And most importantly, bring them before God.

Your differences can become some of the most beautiful parts of your family's story. You may discover traditions you never knew existed. You may learn to cook foods you never imagined trying. You may develop your own family traditions that combine the best of both worlds. You may find that God uses the very differences you once thought would make marriage difficult to create a deeper understanding, greater patience, and a richer kind of love.

Love, Culture & Keto

For us, keto isn't just about changing what we eat. It's become part of a much bigger story about marriage, family, culture, health, faith, and learning to grow together. Our kitchen has become one of the places where those worlds meet. Hungarian paprika sits beside American ingredients. Traditional recipes get a low-carb makeover. Our daughter learns from both of us. In the middle of it all, we're learning what it means to build a Christ-centered home. We're still a work in progress, but aren't we all? And, maybe that's the best part. We're doing it together, with grace, with laughter, with prayer, and with the Lord guiding our family one day at a time.

Blessings from our home to yours,

~ Anya Heidi

A Sweet Goodbye to the School Year and a Warm Hello to Summer (Keto Style) ☀️

Celebrate the end of the school year and the beginning of summer with reflections on family, faith, and the joys of the season, plus a touch of keto inspiration for a healthy and happy summer break.

As we pack away backpacks, say goodbye to lunchboxes, and celebrate our young daughter’s last few days of school before summer break, it’s hard not to feel a wave of emotion. This year has been full of growth—both hers and ours. From those first days in the classroom back in the fall to her confident chatter about science projects, story time, and friendships, we’ve watched her blossom in ways only God could have orchestrated.

Now, with the school bell ringing its final tone soon for the year, we welcome summer like an old friend. There's something sacred in the shift of seasons—a quiet invitation to slow down, soak in family time, fun in the sun, and rediscover the simple joys of being together.

Faith in Every Season

This season change also reminds us how faithful God is through every transition. Just as He brought our daughter through a year of learning, new challenges, and victories, we trust He will guide us through this summer too. Whether it’s quiet mornings with devotions on the porch, singing in the rain, riding our bicycles, picnics, time at the beach, or evening walks hand-in-hand, we’re making room for faith to anchor us—especially in the unstructured beauty of summertime.

Family First—Always

Summer gives us the chance to reconnect not just with nature and sunshine, but with each other. We’re planning summer playdates, vacation trips to include Disney World and Europe, beach days, and maybe even some good old-fashioned picnics and sprinkler fun. These are the moments that build our family bond—messy, laughter-filled, and utterly unforgettable.

Keto in the Kitchen (Even in Summer)

Just because summer brings ice cream trucks and BBQs doesn’t mean our commitment to health goes on vacation. We’re continuing our keto journey with fresh, seasonal recipes that keep us energized and feeling good. Think grilled veggies, keto-friendly popsicles, and plenty of refreshing infused waters and keto lemonade. It’s not about restriction. It’s about balance, nourishment, and enjoying every bite together.

As we move into this new season, our hearts are full of gratitude—for a school year well-spent, amazing teachers, for the gift of family and friends, for the joy of summer days, and above all, for a faithful God who walks with us through every season.

Wishing you and your family a summer filled with laughter, light, and love.

Blessings,

Anya

Honoring the Brave: A Memorial Day Eve Reflection

Honoring the Brave: A Memorial Day Eve Reflection with Family, Faith, and Food

As the sun begins to set on Memorial Day Eve, there’s a sacred stillness that settles in our hearts. This evening isn’t just the beginning of a long weekend. It’s a time of reflection, reverence, and remembrance. Before the cookouts, parades, and patriotic playlists, we pause to honor the brave souls who gave their lives for the freedoms we hold dear.

For many of us, Memorial Day weekend also brings the blessing of time spent with family. It's a moment to gather around the table, share stories, and pray together—not just for the fallen, but for the unity and peace they sacrificed so much to protect.

Faith, Family, and Freedom

In our home, Memorial Day Eve is marked by family time, a candle lit in remembrance, and a prayer for those who continue to serve. We pray for the many men and women who wore the uniform and give thanks for their courage.

We believe that faith is the thread that weaves through every freedom we enjoy. As Scripture says in John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." On this solemn eve, we hold that verse close, teaching our daughter not just the history of the day, but the heart behind it.

A Keto Memorial Day Recipe: Grilled Garlic Butter Chicken Thighs

As you prepare for a weekend of food and fellowship, here’s a delicious keto-friendly recipe that’s perfect for honoring the day while staying on track with your goals.

🍗 Grilled Garlic Butter Chicken Thighs (Keto-Friendly)

  • 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  2. In a small bowl, mix melted butter, garlic, lemon juice, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper.

A Joyous Step in Faith: My Hungarian Husband’s Baptism in America

A Joyous Step in Faith: My Hungarian Husband’s Baptism in America

Some moments in life become treasured memories almost the instant they happen. This past Sunday, May 18, 2025, was one of those moments. It was a day filled with faith, family, tears, laughter, and a reminder that God can bring people together across cultures, languages, and thousands of miles. My Hungarian husband, Zsolt, was baptized at our church here in America, surrounded by family and friends—and by loved ones watching from Hungary. It was more than a baptism. For our family, it was a beautiful milestone in a journey that has been unfolding one conversation, one question, one prayer, and one step of faith at a time.

The Moment Everything Became Real

From the moment we walked into church that morning, there was a sense of anticipation in the air. The worship was beautiful, the message was moving, and there was a peaceful excitement that is difficult to put into words. When my husband stepped into the baptismal water, everything else around me seemed to fade into the background. I watched my husband publicly declare his faith in Jesus, and I was overwhelmed with emotion. There is something incredibly powerful about watching someone you love take such a personal step of faith. As his wife, I knew some of the conversations and questions that had brought him to that moment. I knew this wasn't simply something he was doing because other people expected it of him. This was his decision. His testimony. His declaration of faith, and watching him stand there with such confidence brought tears to my eyes.

A Baptism Watched From Hungary

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was knowing that our family in Hungary could be there in their own way. Zsolt's 86-year-old mother, along with other family members and friends in Hungary, watched the baptism through our church's livestream. Thousands of miles separated us, but for those few moments, distance didn't feel quite so significant. They could see him. They could hear his testimony. They could share in our joy. He even got to say hello to his mother as well as our pastor did. After the service, messages of encouragement and love came in from Hungary. Reading those messages reminded me how powerful technology can be when it helps families stay connected across borders. For a family that spans two countries, these moments mean so much.

From Questions to Faith

Zsolt's journey toward this day has been beautiful to witness. It didn't happen overnight. There were curious conversations, honest questions, moments of searching, and discussions about faith, God, Jesus, grace, and what it means to truly follow Christ. Over time, I watched something change in him. His faith became personal. His peace grew. His heart became more open to God's love and grace. Eventually, he reached the point where he was ready to stand in front of our church family and publicly declare his trust in Jesus. As his wife, I couldn't have been prouder! Faith journeys are rarely perfectly straight. They are often made up of small steps—sometimes forward, sometimes uncertain, and sometimes simply moments of being willing to ask another question. Looking back, I can see how all those little moments eventually led to this one.

An American Wife and a Hungarian Husband

Being married to someone from another country has taught me that love isn't just about finding common ground. Sometimes, it's about learning to appreciate the differences. Our marriage has brought together two cultures, two backgrounds, different traditions, different experiences, and sometimes even different ways of communicating, but faith has given us another place to meet. Standing beside my Hungarian husband as he was baptized in an American church felt incredibly significant to me. It represented more than his individual decision. It reminded me of the life we're building together. We may have grown up on opposite sides of the world, but we're walking forward together. That is something I never take for granted.

Celebrating Around the Kitchen Table

After church, we had a party and gathered at home with friends and family to celebrate. There was food, laughter, stories, conversation, and plenty of joy. Honestly, some of my favorite family memories aren't created at big events. They're created around the kitchen table. They're the Sunday breakfasts before church. The cozy dinners at home. The conversations that stretch longer than expected. The laughter over recipes that didn't quite turn out the way we planned, and even the occasional keto baking disaster!

Over the years, Zsolt and I have also made intentional choices about taking better care of ourselves, including embracing a low-carb, keto-inspired lifestyle together. For us, healthy living has become another way of practicing intentionality as a family. We've shared meals, experimented with recipes, celebrated successes, and laughed at our failures. Those everyday choices may seem small, but I've come to believe that small choices often shape the bigger story of our lives.

Faith, Food, Family, and the Everyday Journey

One thing this season of life has taught me is that faith doesn't only show up inside the church. It shows up at the kitchen table. It shows up when we encourage one another. It shows up when we make healthier choices together. It shows up when we listen, forgive, pray, celebrate, and keep choosing each other. Our faith journey and our family life aren't separate worlds. They're woven together in the ordinary moments of every day. That is what made celebrating Zsolt's baptism around our table afterward feel so special. The baptism itself was a powerful public declaration of faith. The meal afterward reminded me that faith is also lived out quietly....in our homes, our marriages, and our everyday choices.

A New Beginning

Zsolt's baptism wasn't the end of his faith journey. It was a beginning. A beautiful new chapter. As his wife, I'm excited to see where God leads him and where God leads us as a family. I'm grateful for the people who prayed for us, encouraged us, celebrated with us, and watched from thousands of miles away.

To everyone who was there in person and everyone who joined us through the livestream: Thank you! Your love was felt. Your prayers mattered. This Sunday gave us a memory we'll carry with us for the rest of our lives. Sometimes the most beautiful milestones aren't about how far we've come. They're about realizing that we're just getting started.

This is just the beginning.

More From Our Journey

If you're interested in following our story, I'll be sharing more about our life as an American-Hungarian couple, faith and marriage, navigating two cultures, family life, and the simple everyday choices that help us live healthier and more intentionally together. Because sometimes the biggest blessings are found in the most ordinary moments.

Easter Dinner, Keto Style: A Christ-Centered Resurrection Feast

Easter Dinner, Keto Style: A Christ-Centered Resurrection Feast

He is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Easter is so much more than pastel eggs, spring flowers, pretty dresses, and a beautiful family dinner around the table. Easter is the heart of our Christian faith. It is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ—His victory over the grave, the fulfillment of God's promises, and the hope we have because of Him....and that hope changes everything. The resurrection reminds us that God is a God of new life, transformation, redemption, and restoration. As we celebrate Easter, we can carry that same spirit of renewal into the way we care for ourselves, our families, and the bodies God has entrusted to us.

Romans 12:1 reminds us:

"Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."

For me, healthy living isn't about perfection. It's about stewardship, gratitude, and making intentional choices that help me feel my best while keeping God at the center.

So what does Easter Sunday look like when you're following a keto or low-carb lifestyle?

It looks like gathering around the table.

It looks like enjoying delicious food without feeling like you're missing out.

And it might just look like a beautiful plate of rosemary-garlic lamb chops with creamy cauliflower mash.

Let's make this Easter feast both delicious and meaningful.

🍖 Keto Rosemary Garlic Lamb Chops

Lamb makes a beautiful centerpiece for an Easter celebration.

Throughout Scripture, lamb carries deep symbolism connected with sacrifice and redemption. As Christians, Easter ultimately points us to Jesus—the Lamb of God—and His once-for-all sacrifice for us.

These rosemary garlic lamb chops are simple enough for a weeknight but special enough for your Easter table.

They're savory, tender, flavorful, and naturally low in carbohydrates.

Ingredients

  • 4 lamb chops
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Zest of 1 lemon, optional

Instructions

  1. Make the marinade.
In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper, and lemon zest.

  2. Season the lamb.
Rub the mixture generously over both sides of the lamb chops.

  3. Let them rest.
Allow the lamb to marinate for about 30 minutes. For even more flavor, cover and refrigerate overnight.

  4. Heat your cooking surface.
Preheat a skillet, grill pan, or outdoor grill over medium-high heat.

  5. Cook the lamb.
Cook for approximately 3–4 minutes per side for medium-rare, adjusting the cooking time according to the thickness of your chops and your preferred doneness.

  6. Rest before serving.
Transfer the lamb chops to a plate and allow them to rest for a few minutes before serving.

What to Serve With Lamb Chops

Turn this into a beautiful low-carb Easter dinner by serving your lamb with:

  • Creamy cauliflower mash
  • Roasted asparagus
  • A crisp green salad
  • Roasted Brussels sprouts
  • Sautéed green beans
  • A simple lemon-herb butter

The result is a colorful, satisfying Easter meal that feels festive without relying on traditional high-carb sides.

🥣 Creamy Cauliflower Mash

Mashed potatoes may be a classic Easter side dish, but if you're following a keto or low-carb lifestyle, you don't have to skip the creamy comfort food. This creamy cauliflower mash is smooth, buttery, garlicky, and incredibly easy to make. It's also a wonderful option for anyone looking for a gluten-free, vegetable-forward side dish. You may find yourself making it long after Easter is over.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped chives, fresh thyme, or shredded Parmesan for garnish, optional

Dairy-Free Option

You can substitute the butter with olive oil and use your favorite dairy-free cream cheese alternative.

Instructions

1. Steam the cauliflower

Place the cauliflower florets in a large pot or steamer basket and steam for approximately 10–12 minutes, or until very tender.

The softer the cauliflower, the smoother your mash will be.

2. Sauté the garlic

While the cauliflower is cooking, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat.

Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1–2 minutes, just until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

3. Blend until creamy

Add the steamed cauliflower, garlic butter, and cream cheese to a food processor or blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy.

You can also use an immersion blender if you prefer a slightly more rustic texture.

4. Season and serve

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh chives, thyme, or Parmesan, if desired.

Serve warm alongside your lamb chops.

Tips for the Best Cauliflower Mash

  • Steam rather than boil the cauliflower when possible to avoid excess water.
  • Make sure the cauliflower is very tender before blending.
  • If the mash is too thick, add a small splash of unsweetened almond milk or another preferred liquid.

✝️ New Life, New Choices

Easter is a beautiful reminder that transformation is possible.

The resurrection of Jesus isn't simply a story we remember once a year. It is the foundation of our hope and a reminder that God brings life where we see death, purpose where we see confusion, and renewal where we feel stuck.

That message can encourage us in every area of our lives. Maybe you're beginning a healthier lifestyle. Maybe you're returning to healthy habits after a difficult season. Maybe you've been following keto for years or maybe you're simply looking for ways to be more intentional about what you put on your family's table. Wherever you are, give yourself grace. Healthy living doesn't have to mean perfection. It can be about small, faithful choices made day after day. Easter gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate those choices with gratitude rather than guilt, so gather your family, set the table, say the prayer, enjoy the food, and remember the One who makes all things new.

Let every bite remind you of the freedom, grace, and fullness we have in Christ.

He is risen indeed!

Hallelujah!

🌿 Make It an Easter Tradition

Food has a beautiful way of bringing people together.

This Easter, instead of focusing on what you can't eat, focus on what you can enjoy....a delicious meal....a grateful heart....a table filled with people you love....and most importantly, the hope we have because the tomb is empty.

He is not here; He has risen!

Happy Easter, friends. May your celebration be filled with faith, family, joy, and plenty of delicious food.

He is risen indeed! ✝️
