Körözött: A Creamy Taste of Hungarian Comfort
If you've ever sat at a sunlit wooden table in a Hungarian kitchen, chances are you've tasted körözött—a creamy, paprika-infused cheese spread that's as nostalgic as it is delicious. This simple, rustic dish brings back memories of slow mornings, fresh bread, and the sound of laughter echoing from the next room.
Today, I’m sharing not just the recipe, but a little piece of my family’s story. This is one of my favorite Hungarian dip/spread recipes. It is so different compared to American dips/spreads and oh so good!
🧀 What Is Körözött?
Körözött (pronounced kur-oh-zott) is a traditional Hungarian cheese spread made with fresh túró (a type of curd cheese, similar to quark or farmer's cheese), blended with sweet Hungarian paprika, butter, and fresh green onions or scallions. It’s creamy, tangy, savory—and perfectly balanced with that unmistakable paprika warmth.
🥣 Classic Körözött Recipe
Ingredients:
-
7 oz farmer’s cheese (I buy the farmer's cheese from Publix as not all grocery stores carry it)
-
2 tbsp soft butter
-
1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika (plus more to taste)
-
1 tsp caraway seeds (optional but traditional)
-
2 tbsp finely chopped scallions or green onions
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
A dash of sour cream or yogurt if you want it smoother
Instructions:
-
In a bowl, mix the farmer's cheese and butter until creamy.
-
Stir in the paprika, caraway seeds (if using), and green onions.
-
Season with salt and pepper.
-
Let it chill for at least 30 minutes for the flavors to blend or overnight.
-
Serve with fresh or crusty keto bread, cucumbers, radishes or even bell pepper slices.
